There are two units in this department
1. Controlled Drugs Unit
2. Enforcement Unit


CONTROLLED DRUGS UNIT

Is responsible for the regulation of narcotics psychotropic substances and precursor chemicals imported into the country
and also for implementing measures that will prohibit the diversion of these substances from licit to illicit trade. 


ENFORCEMENT UNIT

The ‘Enforcement Unit’ responsible for enforcing the laws and regulations of the Board as well as investigating and compiling
case files of defaulters for the Board.

CORE MANDATES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To update the Board on enforcement activities conducted (peddler raids investigative inspections closures etc.)
To update the Board on the number of import permit requests received and prepared 
To update the Board on the outcome of the Disciplinary Committee meetings and inquiries 
To update the Board on quarterly reports on Narcotic and controlled substances sent to INCB
To update the Board on complaints received and addressed
To update the Board on the achievements made during the period under review

FUNCTIONS OF THE DEPARTMENT

  • The investigation and compilation of case files for the Board
  • Preventing and prohibiting the importation manufacture distribution dispensing and selling of all counterfeit adulterated banned medicines

. Substandard or expired medicines and other regulated products

  • Combating the hawking of medicines and other regulated products that are not duly registered with the Board.
  • Prevention and combating the establishment or opening of illegal pharmaceutical outlets that are not duly licensed by the board.
  • Enforcing the control of the importation distribution and use of narcotics and psychotropic substances in Sierra Leone 
  • Ensuring that Sierra Leone’s obligation under the international drugs treaties with respect to narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances are fulfilled.
  •   Promoting activities gearing toward the rational use of drugs and reducing demand for the psychotropic drugs.
